Job Details

A career in music for film and TV allows you to combine your creative musical talents with the power of visual media, enhancing emotional connections and elevating the viewer's experience. As film scores play crucial role in setting the mood and tone of scenes, composers have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on audiences. Additionally, the film industry offers diverse projects, from independent films to major blockbusters, providing endless opportunities for growth and collaboration. Catalyst is not a music school - we only teach music for filmmaking. You must have some previous musical experience.

Course Levels

This course is offered for all levels: kids, youth, explore, advanced and professional. This is an ongoing format class, which means it has no set beginning or end. You can continue to take classes until you and your teachers decide it is time for you to move up to the next level.

LEVEL: KIDS

Ages 7-11
Classes are available once per week for 1.5 hours per class

LEVEL: YOUTH

Ages 12-16
Classes are available once per week for 1.5 hours per class

LEVEL: EXPLORE

Ages 17+
Classes are available twice per week for 2 hours per class
The explore level is open all beginners and those who are curious to explore the craft

LEVEL: ADVANCED

Ages 17+
Classes are available twice per week for 2 hours per class
The advanced level is open to those with some previous level of training, and those who are interested in pursuing it as a career.

LEVEL: PROFESSIONAL

Ages 17+
Classes are available twice per week for 2 hours per class
The professional level is open to those with previous working experience. An entrance interview is required.

Music story design
Finding your characters' emotional centers
Worldbuilding
Music for social media
How to breakdown a scene and determine the character arc
Creating a backstory
Finding your personal sense of self in your craft
Where music fits in the bigger picture of the industry process
Voice and movement exercises
Technical aspects of music on a film production

Wellness Topics Covered

How to maintain a healthy creative lifestyle balance (discipline, schedule, rent, etc.)
Dealing with harassment (long hours, food on set, sexual, emotional, etc.)
How to critique/give feedback
Professional development (expectations, behavior on set, maintaining connections, marketing yourself, how to say no to people [knowing when the answer is no and how to make as few people hate you as possible])
How to deal with social media content and feedback
What notes are, how to interpret them & how to deal with feelings of being attacked emotionally
Your support team (manager, agent, etc.) and tips how to grow your career

Previous Experience Required

Previous music training is required. We do not teach music fundamentals. We do not teach how to play instruments. This course is for people who want to expand their existing musical talents and knowledge into the world of filmmaking.

There are no other prerequisite courses within the Catalyst curriculum.
